In my best He-Man voice: “We have the trailer!” As part of its inaugural virtual Geeked Week event, Netflix shared the first full look at Kevin Smith’s upcoming animated series Masters of the Universe: Revelation. Even after 40 years, Skeletor is trying to claim Castle Grayskull for himself. Eternia will have to find itself a hero to stop him. But its Guardians are not as unified as they once were. The show looks like it will capture everything we loved about the original series, all while adding new life to the franchise. Plus, a new aftershow is part of the package.

Now that is a trailer. The animation looks incredible. It’s a crisp modern update that is still clearly a loving reflection of the original style. All presented with an energy that has us ready to fight alongside He-Man ourselves. The action sequences here look like the kind of modern day upgrade you can only get with a bigger budget.

And Bonnie Tyler’s “Holding Out for a Hero” is absolutely the perfect song for this teaser. It captures the spirit of this action-packed trailer. And it also adds the right touch of cheese we have hoped the show would give us. We don’t want some gritty reboot, nor do we want some kind of realistic Masters of the Universe. We want the same wonderfully ridiculous-yet-genuinely great ’80s ethos of the original. And you don’t get anymore wonderfully ridiculous-yet-genuinely great ’80s than this song.

We also love the little snippets of dialogue we got of Mark Hamill as the voice of Skeletor. We haven’t even seen the show and we already can’t imagine him not being a part of it.

Skeletor and He-Man stand face to face with weapons in a forestNetflix

Netflix doesn’t have to show us anything else about the movie to have us tune in. But the film’s official synopsis has us just as excited:

“The war for Eternia culminates in Masters of the Universe: Revelation, an innovative and action-packed animated series that picks up where the iconic characters left off decades ago. After a cataclysmic battle between He-Man and Skeletor, Eternia is fractured and the Guardians of Grayskull are scattered. And after decades of secrets tore them apart, it’s up to Teela to reunite the broken band of heroes, and solve the mystery of the missing Sword of Power in a race against time to restore Eternia and prevent the end of the universe.”

Netflix

Since Netflix knows that we want all the He-Man we can get, it also announced the series’ post-episode talk show. Revelations: The Masters of the Universe Revelation Aftershow (a perfectly silly name) will give viewers an inside look at the series. Showrunner and executive producer Kevin Smith will host. Along with executive producer and Vice President, Content Creative, Mattel Television Rob David, and actress Tiffany Smith.

Part 1 of the aftershow, which will spans five episodes, will premiere Friday, July 23—the same day as the series. The 25-minute episode will feature appearances from many members of the cast: Mark Hamill, Chris Wood, Sarah Michelle Gellar, Lena Headey, Tiffany Smith, Henry Rollins, Griffin Newman, Jason Mewes, and Alan Oppenheimer.

Unlike Eternia, we won’t need a hero when the show premieres. Just a day off to watch all of it.
