The first footage for Marvel’s Avengers: A-Day confused the internet when it dropped back in June, during Square Enix’s E3 presentation. The game is ostensibly part of the Marvel world, but exists in a timeline distinct from the Marvel Cinematic Universe. What does that mean? Well, the characters are all familiar, but they look different than they do in the MCU–no Robert Downey, Jr., no Chris Evans, no Scarlett Johansson. It’s a little bit confusing, since these are still the Avengers, just not our Avengers… but also, kind of?

If you’re lost, have no fear! Square Enix and Marvel Entertainment have released gameplay footage from A-Day’s prologue, which helps establish this version of events and the characters that occupy the game.

As you can tell, the slightly altered versions of these characters makes the game a little uncanny valley, but once you settle in, you’ll see these are still–in a sense–the characters we’ve come to love. The game is set on the titular A-Day, as San Francisco celebrates the Avengers’ new West Coast base. But things go awry during the festivities, and the Avengers are outlawed. Five years later, they reassemble to continue the fight against evil.

In the prologue gameplay footage, we see Thor and Iron Man team up to check out the A-Day threat, with Thor wielding his iconic hammer Mjölnir against some skull-faced baddies. Meanwhile, Iron Man blasts away the villains while peppering his fight with his trademark Tony Stark snark. (He may not be voiced by Robert Downey, Jr., but the vibe is still there.) We also see Black Widow and Hulk scope out of the action–on Captain America’s orders–followed by the Hulk leaping into action. Throughout the footage, we see that these Avengers, like the Avengers in the MCU, also quarrel and don’t always see eye-to-eye  in their missions.

There’s a lot more loaded into this 20-minute footage, so check it out above and get yourself hyped for Marvel’s Avengers: A-Day, which releases for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PC, and Google Stadia on May 15, 2020.
