Back in April, the first footage for The Mandalorian was shown to the audience at Star Wars Celebration, a convention dedicated to the galaxy far, far away. The footage was stunning, but unlike other footage from the convention–namely, the trailer for The Rise of Skywalker–it wasn’t put online, and was an exclusive for those in the crowd. We’ve been waiting for that footage to drop in larger context for a while, and today we got our wish. Here is the first official trailer for The Mandalorian, which just dropped at D23.

The Mandalorian is a streaming series for Disney+, the first live-action Star Wars TV show, and as you can see from this footage, it’s a grittier, more grown up story than what we’ve seen in this universe before. Executive produced by Jon Favreau, with episodes directed by a number of talents–including Taika Waititi, Bryce Dallas Howard, Rick Famuyiwa, and Deborah Chow–this thing looks downright fantastic.

The series stars Pedro Pascal as the eponymous gunman, who’s flanked by a cast of characters played by the likes of Gina Carano, Nick Nolte, Giancarlo Esposito, Carl Weathers, and Werner Herzog. That’s right, Werner g-darn Herzog is in a Star Wars thing. How excited can we get?! The official synopsis is vague–“a lone gunfighter in the outer reaches of the galaxy far from the authority of the New Republic”–but as we can see, there’s a lot going on. It’s also both excitingly new but also full of familiar elements. (Stormtrooper heads! Twi’leks! )

If this trailer tells us anything, it’s that The Mandalorian is going to be something special. We’ll find out for certain when the first episode–directed by The Clone Wars and Star Wars: Rebels creator Dave Filoni–lands on Disney+ on November 12. That’s the day it launches, so you’ll have at least something to watch.
