The second season of the Disney+ Star Wars series The Mandalorian is upon us. We have a release date. There are a ton of casting rumors. But ultimately, we know very little about the second season. Here’s everything that’s been officially announced, what we can infer, the rumors, and everything else about The Mandalorian‘s second season.
Lucasfilm
What happened in season one?
Ahead of The Mandalorian‘s return for season two, Disney+ released a quick recap video detailing Mando’s journey from lone bounty hunter to doting dad. The short video takes us through Mando’s season one adventures, his rallies, and, most importantly, the enemies who’ll continue to stop at nothing to get their hands on The Child in season two.
Where did we leave off?
Season one of The Mandalorian ended on cliffhanger. After successfully retrieving The Child (otherwise known by his internet name, Baby Yoda) from Moff Gideon (Giancarlo Esposito) and his scout troopers, the eponymous Mandalorian (Pedro Pascal) is told by the Armorer (Emily Swallow) to guard the little green alien with his life. The Armorer also tells Mando to research the Child and find his people. This is likely the journey we’ll follow in season two: Mandalorian and baby, trekking through the galaxy for answers.
We also learned that Moff Gideon survived his fight with the Mandalorian and is also in possession of the Darksaber, a fabled and very important weapon in Star Wars canon. What does this mean for his character? We’ll surely find out in season two.
When does it come out?
According to the official Star Wars Twitter account, the first episodes of The Mandalorian‘s second season will release on October 30. Just in time for Halloween!

Note that the tweet says “episodes”—plural. The first season dropped each new episode weekly. Maybe we’ll get more than one on October 30. Or maybe it’s just a stylistic thing, meaning another new episode will join the season one pool on that date. Either way, something new is coming that day.
According to Entertainment Weekly, there will once again be eight episodes of varying lengths. The magazine also said that the series will pick up where it left off in season one.
Who will direct the episodes?
The first season of The Mandalorian boasted a slew of impressive behind-the-scenes talent. Jon Favreau, who created the show, directed episodes, along with Taika Waititi, Bryce Dallas Howard, Rick Famuyiwa, Deborah Chow, and Star Wars animated maestro Dave Filoni. Favreau, Howard, Famuyiwa, and Filoni all returned for season two, along with new-to-Star Wars directors Peyton Reed and Robert Rodriguez. Carl Weathers, who plays Greef Karga in the series, also directed a season two episode.
Who will join the cast?
The casting rumors for season two of The Mandalorian are wild! Though nothing is confirmed, there is enough ancillary evidence to make us pretty confident these things will indeed happen. According to Slashfilm, Rosario Dawson will play a live-action version of the beloved animated character Ahsoka Tano. (A rumor that Dawson has heavily hinted as being true in other interviews.) The same film site also reported that Katee Sackhoff will play the live-action version of another animated character: Bo-Katan Kryze, a character she voiced in The Clone Wars and Rebels.
Timothy Olyphant also allegedly joined the cast and will play a character who wears Boba Fett’s armor, according to Slashfilm. (We speculated that we might be playing Cobb Vanth from the Aftermath novels.) Michael Biehn was also cast as a bounty hunter, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
Arguably the most exciting bit of news is that Temuera Morrison will (again allegedly) play Boba Fett in the second season of The Mandalorian. He might also play the role of Captain Rex.
