Dwarves, Dragons, Elves, if there is one thing they all have in common, it’s that they have a love for shiny things. And that’s a love that standard-issue humans, not from Middle-earth, also share. Which makes these The Lord of the Rings collectible coins from NZ Post incredibly irresistible.

The Lord of the Rings LOTR collectible coins from NZ Post

NZ Post released these commemorative coins to celebrate the 20th anniversary of The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring. The Lord of the Rings trilogy, of course, was filmed entirely in New Zealand. NZ Post Head of Stamps and Collectables Antony Harris shares, “These coins acknowledge that this iconic film is now a significant component of New Zealand history, culture, and identity. There is no doubt the film was a turning point for tourism and film production in our little corner of the world.”

Meaningful and beautiful. The silver-proof LOTR coins come in three sets of three coins. The coins themselves are 1oz silver coins. They feature primarily metallic designs interspersed with intricate pops of color. And each set celebrates an iconic part of the first Lord of the Rings film. The collections include The Fellowship, A Shadow in the East, and The Quest of the Ring. Together, they tell the story of the first film.

The Fellowship LOTR Coin Set

The Fellowship LOTR coin set celebrates the team of unlikely heroes that came together to help Frodo carry the One Ring to Mordor. Although they faced trials and hardships, the hearts of the fellowship remained pure to the last. The coins in the set highlight Frodo, Boromir, and Gandalf.

Frodo is depicted in the instant just before he wears the ring for the first time, an iconic moment from the film. Boromir is shown holding the shattered sword Narsil. Meanwhile, Gandalf is plucked from early scenes in the movie. His coin depicts him meeting Frodo in Hobbiton just before Bilbo’s birthday.  It’s a beautiful coin set for anyone who deeply loves the characters from the series.

Next, the A Shadow in the East set takes a darker turn. These Lord of the Rings coins showcase that not everything that glitters is gold. These three coins feature the main villains from The Fellowship of the Ring. First, the Eye of Sauron blinks up from the coin. Its evil spirit loves to lurk in metallic forms, after all. The following coin showcases “Lurtz…an Uruk-hai, a monster sent by Saruman to capture Frodo and bring the One Ring to him.”

And, on the final coin, the deceitful Saruman communicates with Sauron through the palantír. (Which looks absolutely gorgeous.) Better make sure to keep a close watch on this set.

The last set of coins take you on an adventure. The Quest of the Ring LOTR coin set highlights some key moments from The Fellowship of the Ring. The first coin reveals a beautifully intricate depiction of the Doors of Durin. We adore the lush green of the coin. The second coin takes us to the monumental Gates of Argonath, which awe the fellowship and us. Lastly, the final coin reveals Gandalf’s escape by eagle after his capture by Saruman. This is truly an epic coin set if there ever was one.

She also worked on the movie itself through a job at Weta Workshop, a studio that worked on The Lord of the Rings movies.

Though the coins will set you back a bit, the sets run for nearly $500 each; there is no denying they are the perfect addition to any dragon horde.
