Although they were notoriously replaced as the directors of Solo: A Star Wars Story, the careers of the creative duo  Phil Lord and Chris Miller haven’t slowed down a bit. Now, they’ve got their next project officially lined up, and it’s another animated comedy in the vein of The LEGO Movie and Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs. According to The Wrap, their next feature is Sony Animation’s The Mitchells Vs. The Machines, which is set for release on January 10, 2020. Mike Rianda and Jeff Rowe are co-writing and co-directing the film, and you can see the film’s preliminary logo down below.

According to the official description for the film, “the Mitchells are a dysfunctional yet loving family whose road trip gets interrupted by a tech uprising. All around the world, devices we love like phones and self-driving cars turn on humanity, and the Mitchells have to work past their problems to save the world.” It would seem that, based on this description, that this is the first animated family comedy ever made about the singularity. Well, it was bound to happen sooner or later. (Just like the actual singularity…)

Lord and Miller made a name for themselves by taking ideas that sound terrible on paper (a reboot comedy about 21 Jump Street and a movie about LEGOs, for instance) and making actual great films out of them. While the description of The Mitchells Vs. The Machines isn’t terrible, it’s probably going to be much better in the producing hands of Lord and Miller than it would fare elsewhere. As for their next directing gig, the duo is set to tackle the sci-fi story Artemis next.
