The first season of Loki has only just come to an end. So recently, in fact, that it’s still pretty dangerous to get explicit on the details of the ending. (I’ll hold all details for later in the post… just in case you maintain a healthy sleep cycle and weren’t able to watch an hourlong TV show at 3 a.m. No judgment—get your REM! Yay REM!) However, the following news may clue you to the fact that Loki’s finale left things at least somewhat open-ended. Apparently, six episodes could not contain the story of Loki, Sylvie, the TVA, Alioth, alligators, and jet skis. Loki has officially been renewed for a second season on Disney+.
Loki is already the third MCU series to air on Disney+ this year, with several more heading our way soon. Only the first of the batch, WandaVision, has not formally declared intention to continue on in further seasons. (Granted, we’ll still see Wanda and Vision’s story take shape on the big screen.) But established plans for more The Falcon and The Winter Soldier and Loki suggest that ongoing TV shows will become a major piece of the Marvel Universe.

If you did manage to catch the Loki finale (who needs REM! Boo REM!), then you know t hat season two has a lot of ground to cover. In its final installment, Loki season one introduced the long-looming-large Kang the Conqueror. Well, at least one manifestation of him. This Chatty Cathy has been secretly controlling the TVA from behind closed doors; Loki and Sylvie attempted to undermine his master plan, but a bit of multiversal mayhem got in the way. Now, our primary timeline’s history has been retconned, leaving Loki alone with memories of the past. Er, the previous past. The past past. Jeez, timeline stuff is confounding.
But Loki‘s Kate Herron, director and executive producer for season one, won’t return for another season. Deadline talked to Herron on Friday and said, “I’m not returning. I always planned to be just on for this and to be honest, season 2 wasn’t in the—that’s something that just came out and I’m so excited. I’m really happy to watch it as a fan next season, but I just think I’m proud of what we did here and I’ve given it my all. I’m working on some other stuff yet to be announced.”
And the other stuff to be announced is not a Marvel movie either, Herron confirmed.
It’s wild to think of Loki without her. But season two will find its way to Disney+ sometime down the line. At which time, all of our questions will be an…um, probably made even more confusing. But that’s half the fun.
