A Final Fantasy television series? Take our Gil now!
Gather your party, because the first ever live-action Final Fantasy television series is officially in development. Sony Pictures Television, Square Enix, and Hivemind (the production company behind the upcoming The Witcher series) have all teamed up to tell an original story set in Eorzea, the world of Final Fantasy XIV. Ben Lustig and Jake Thornton, game designers and the minds behind the yet-unreleased The Night Kings movie, will work on the show as both writers and Executive Producers.
While details about the series are sparse as of the time of this writing, the series announcement promises a story that “explores the struggle between magic and technology in a quest to bring peace to a land in conflict,” which should sound instantly familiar to anyone who has played a Final Fantasy game. The announcement also says that faces both new and old will be in the series, including series mainstay Cid, who will take form in live-action for the first time in the 30+ year history of the franchise.
Magitek, airships, and, of course, Chocobos will all be along for the ride as well, albeit probably not in live-action so much as live-action-friendly computer animation. And, if the first artwork released by Square Enix is any clue, we might even be seeing Moogles fly across our TV screens when the series debuts as well.
There are still a lot of unknowns about the upcoming Final Fantasy series, including which platform we’ll be tuning into to watch, but anyone who has poured hundreds of hours into a beloved Final Fantasy game won’t even blink at bingeing an entire series if it’s available for streaming. Between this announcement and our first look at the Final Fantasy VII remake, this is a Golden Age for fans of the franchise.
