Several years back, Sony announced a solo movie for Spider-Man villain Kraven the Hunter. But despite several casting rumors, no one is ever confirmed in the lead role. Until now. It seems that former Kick-Ass and Quicksilver actor Aaron Taylor-Johnson is getting a third high-profile comic book role, as The Wrap has just announced he is playing Kraven. J.C. Chandor is directing. This is the third Sony spin-off for a Spider-Man comics villain, following Venom and the upcoming Morbius.
In the original Marvel Comics, Sergei Kravinoff is born into an aristocratic Russian family. He becomes a world-famous international big-game hunter, who tries to catch the ultimate and elusive prize — Spider-Man. The villain first shows up in The Amazing Spider-Man #15 (1964). The Stan Lee/Steve Ditko creation is a founding member of the Sinister Six. Later stories show witch doctor Calypso giving Kravinoff an herbal potion, granting him enhanced speed and senses that match those of a wild jungle cat.
Unlike Venom, the character of Kraven has never had a shelf life outside of as a Spider-Man villain. So it’s hard to see how they are going to create a narrative around the character that doesn’t involve the wall-crawler in some form. There is no news of Tom Holland appearing in the movie so far. One angle they could go with is Kraven coming to the big city, looking to hunt down Spidey as the ultimate prize. But seeing as this is all Kraven’s point of view, we’d never see Spider-Man without his mask on. This means it could be anyone playing him.
Fans were hoping to see Kraven the Hunter in the Sinister Six line-up, for the upcoming Spider-Man: No Way Home. But it seems they want to introduce him in his own movie first. Just as long as he keeps that wild fur-lined vest, we’re at least intrigued by the possibility. There is no release date yet for the Kraven the Hunter feature film.
