We’ve covered a lot of strange ice creams over the years. Condiment flavors like ketchup, mustard, and mayonnaise have confused us. And bizarre concoctions such as ramen and everything bagel (not-so) sweet frozen treats have totally weirded us out. However, the most bizarre thing about the latest unlikely food mashup is that it didn’t happen sooner. Not because it makes sense. But because companies love cooking up ridiculous new ways to serve mac and cheese. And there’s no more ridiculous way to do that than with Kraft Macaroni & Cheese ice cream.

Kraft is teaming up with Van Leeuwen Ice Cream for an unlikely savory dessert. (Which we first head about at Candy Hunting.) They’ve partnered to turn that iconic blue box of pasta and cheesy powder into ice cream. An official press release says Van Leeuwen made the Kraft Macaroni & Cheese ice cream “with only a few” ingredients. They say the result is “a cool, creamy scoop of ice cream that brings that comforting, nostalgic feeling from a warm bowl of Kraft Macaroni & Cheese.”

We are unable at this time to confirm if mac and cheese-flavored ice cream is “comforting.” Until then we remain skeptical. We’re also unsure if Kraft knows what a “refreshing” treat on a hot summer day tastes like.

“We know that there is nothing more refreshing on a hot summer day than ice cream. That is why we wanted to combine two of the most iconic comfort foods to create an ice cream with the unforgettable flavor of Kraft Macaroni & Cheese we all grew up with,” said Emily Violett, Sr. Associate Brand Manager for Kraft Macaroni & Cheese, in a statement. “As big fans of Van Leeuwen, we knew they’d be the perfect partner to create this ice cream with us. Not only does it taste delicious, but it’s also made with high-quality ingredients and contains no artificial flavors, preservatives, or dyes just like our Kraft Macaroni & Cheese.”

This is just the latest strange version of the pantry staple from Kraft. The company has previously had limited-release mac and cheese flavors like candy and pumpkin spice. And this isn’t the first sweet treat take on the popular dish we’ve come across. We’re still intrigued/haunted by mac and cheese candy canes.

If you want to try this iteration though don’t delay. Kraft Macaroni & Cheese Ice Cream goes on sale July 14 at 11 a.m. ET. You can get yours at Van Leeuwen shops and the company’s online store. A pint costs $12. It will only be sold while supplies last.

Why July 14? That’s National Macaroni & Cheese Day. A day we did not plan on celebrating with ice cream. But maybe we should have. The weirdest thing about this bizarre dessert is that it didn’t exist already.
