Kermit the Frog Has a Very Special Message for Us

Leave it to a felt green Muppet to give us comfort in our time of need. Kermit the Frog is here for all of us. He is the epitome of all things pure and good. This time in the world is certainly scary and everything feels uncertain, but Kermit knows how to soothe our fears. The iconic frog shared a performance of  “The Rainbow Connection” on Twitter and YouTube. And you know what? Kermit singing does make things seem a little more okay.

The Muppets have long been a bright beacon of happiness for children and adults alike, so it’s no surprise Disney brought back Jim Henson’s iconic song and frog for this special performance. It’s part of their #DisneyMagicMoments series. The video released on Saturday has a calm, reflective Kermit sitting in nature with nothing but himself, a camera, and his banjo. He’s clearly staying in isolation, too. Voiced by Matt Vogel, who’s been playing the character since 2017, the video is sweet, simple and extremely reassuring.

This isn’t the first time Kermit has brought joy to many by performing this delightful song. Originally performed in the 1979 film The Muppet Movie, “The Rainbow Connection” was written with music and lyrics by Paul Williams and Kenneth Ascher. Kermit the Frog (voiced by Jim Henson) performed the song in the film and then the whole cast sang the tune at the end of the film.

Kermit the Frog has long been an iconic figure in pop culture. Fans know this song is synonymous with the frog. Sometimes Kermit’s competitive streak comes out, however, as seen when he and Steve Martin had a “ battle of the banjosback in 2013 for Funny or Die. They seemed to have worked it out in the end, however. That sweet sound can’t keep anyone—or any amphibian—angry for too long.

While times are scary, “The Rainbow Connection” offers solace for those dealing with uncertainty. Let’s choose to believe that we will see the rainbow soon! “Rainbows are visions, they’re only illusions… But I know they’re wrong wait and see.”

To all the lovers, and dreamers and you… keep believing.
