How interested would you be in a movie that combines elements of Misery, Cape Fear, and The King of Comedy, all set against a horror movie-style home invasion? Sounds pretty intriguing, right? Okay, now would you be more or less excited if we told you it stars John Travolta in a ridiculous wig, overacting in his role of someone who clearly has severe mental health issues? Somehow that makes it both more and less exciting, right? But what if we told you the whole thing is directed by Fred Durst. Yes, that Fred Durst, the lead singer of Limp Bizkit. Well no need to imagine what that would be like, because that movie, The Fanatic, actually exists. And the first trailer for it is…..it’s uh……well……it’s so ridiculous it doesn’t look like it can possibly be real.

“Moose is a rabid movie fan who is obsessed with his favorite celebrity action hero, Hunter Dunbar. When he is cheated out of his opportunity to finally meet Hunter, Moose gets a little help from his friend Leah, a well-connected paparazzi photographer, who knows how to find celebrity homes. Moose turns to stalking to get the celebrity interaction he feels he deserves, and while harmless at first, Moose’s actions begin to take a dark turn as his obsession grows stronger. As the visits continue to escalate, Hunter Dunbar finds himself in increasing danger.”

WE HAVE QUESTIONS.

1) WTF?
2) No, seriously, WTF?
3) What in the hell is John Travolta doing, both with his performance and his participation in this movie? Isn’t he a legit Hollywood star? Why is he in a Fred Durst film? Does he need financial help?
4) Is this secretly a comedy? Is that why the movie star’s name is “Hunter Dunbar?”
5) If this is not a comedy, WTF?

The only thing (we think) we know is that The Fanatic is a remake of the 1981 movie The Fan, which was already remade in 1996 with Wesley Snipes and Robert DeNiro. Now there’s another version. Starring John Travolta in a performance that looks like a the physical manifestation of a Razzie. And it’s directed by Fred Durst.

We’re going to see this, aren’t we? Yeah probably.
