This post contains spoilers for Game of Thrones season eight, episode four, “The Last of the Starks.”

There’s a lot of shady business going on this season on Game of Thrones. The series’ penultimate episode airs Sunday, May 12, and we have no idea where things are headed. Did Jaime really leave Brienne so he could run back into Cersei’s arms? What are Arya and the Hound up to? Is that the last we’ll ever see of Tormund Giantsbane and the rest of the Wildlings?

Those are just a few of our many questions, but perhaps the biggest is: Who will wind up on the Iron Throne? One person complicating that right now is Varys, who in the last episode expressed to Tyrion that his faith in the dragon queen Daenerys Targaryen is beginning to wane. So… whom does Lord Varys truly serve, and can he be trusted?

In this Nerdist News Edition, we break down Varys’ conversation with Tyrion and what it could mean for the final two episodes of the series.

Nerdist had a chance to speak with Conleth Hill, who plays Varys, at the season’s premiere in New York City, and he cleared up a few things about Varys. Namely, who he’s talking about when he says he serves “the realm.”

“What he means by the realm is the people, and not kings or queens, or princes and princesses, but the ordinary people,” said Hill. “He wants a fair society for everyone.”

As Dany prepares to blow down the doors of King’s Landing and mow through innocents on her quest for the Throne, Varys may be plotting behind her back to usurp the would-be queen. But will he be successful? Or will Tyrion betray Varys’ true intent before he can plot to murder her in the name of the realm?

We’ll have all of our answers when Game of Thrones airs its final episode Sunday, May 19.
