It’s just a matter of time before the X-Men family of characters join the MCU. And ever since that became a possibility with the Disney/Fox merger, several fans have been hoping that Hugh Jackman could be coaxed out of his Wolverine retirement which he announced after the release of Logan. But according to a recent interview, it seems like Jackman has remained committed to leaving Logan’s claws on the shelf for good. And he is more than ready for someone else to take up the mantle.

In an interview with The Daily Beast (via IGN), the former Oscar nominee talked about the Disney-Fox merger, and the possibility of bringing Wolvie into the world of the Avengers, saying “If seven years ago that had happened I’d be like, ‘Oh yeah!’ but I knew it was the right time for me to leave the party. Not just for me, but for the character. Somebody else will pick it up and run with it. It’s too good of a character not to.”

So that pretty much confirms that the next time we see Wolverine pop his claws on screen, it’ll be with a new actor taking. It was always far more likely that Kevin Feige would reboot the entire mutant mythology ( except for maybe Deadpool) for Marvel Studios. It would certainly be far more difficult to integrate 20 years of pre-existing X-Men movie continuity into the Marvel Cinematic Universe as we know it.

Having said all that however, we could easily see Feige give Jackman another MCU role down the line. Because if they ever do a big screen version of Secret Wars, we think that Jackman would be the perfect actor to portray the all-powerful Beyonder. And given that the first X-Men film started the ball rolling on Marvel movies in the 21st century in the first place, what better homage could there be than having Jackman in that groovy white leisure suit?
