What a couple of weeks it has been for Hellraiser fans. It feels like only yesterday when we learned The Night House‘s David Bruckner would be directing the Hellraiser reboot. As if that wasn’t enough Hellraiser news,  Deadline is reporting that HBO is developing a new series based on the iconic horror film helmed by none other than Halloween’s David Gordon Green.

This is incredibly exciting news for fans of the franchise; Green has proven that he can reimagine classic horror flicks in a way that respects what came before whilst also creating something new and fresh. We’re very excited for the potential to explore the wider world of Hellraiser in a longer format that can really get into the horror and lore that surrounds it. Mark Verheiden and Michael Dougherty will join Green and will pen Pinhead’s prestige TV debut.

According to Deadline, the series is more of a spiritual expansion of the series and its source material—the Clive Barker novella The Hellbound Heartthan a sequel or reboot. “The idea is to create an elevated continuation and expansion of the well-established Hellraiser mythology. It is by no means a remake, but rather assumes the past mythology to be a given. The centerpiece remains Pinhead, the pin cushion-headed merciless leader of the Cenobites, the formerly humans-turned-demons that live in an extra-dimensional realm and are activated through a puzzle box called the Lament Configuration. The Cenobites come from hell to harvest human souls and keep balance between good and evil.”

We cannot wait for the sights that the cenobites—and Green, Verheiden, and Dougherty—have to show us. We will be keeping a close eye on how this develops as it has jumped right to the top of our most anticipated list.
