Jordan Peele has become one of the modern masters of horror since his breakout hits Get Out and Us. And since then, he’s been extending his talents towards television. First with the Twilight Zone reboot, and now with HBO’s new series Lovecraft Country. And now his collaboration with J.J. Abrams finally has its first teaser trailer. It presents what looks to be a unique mix of historical fiction and good old fashioned monsters.

Peele and Abrams are producing this series along with Misha Green, who will be the series showrunner. Green also wrote and executive-produced the WGN America series Underground. This highly anticipated new series is based on Matt Ruff’s 2016 novel of the same name, which explored the connection between the horror fiction of  author H. P. Lovecraft, and American institutionalized racism during the era of Jim Crow laws. It’s set to debut during the summer, although no official release date has been given. Down below is the official synopsis from HBO:

First Teaser for HBO's LOVECRAFT COUNTRY Has Arrived_1

HBO

“The series follows Atticus Freeman (Jonathan Majors) as he joins up with his friend Letitia (Jurnee Smollett-Bell) and his Uncle George (Courtney B. Vance) to embark on a road trip across 1950s Jim Crow America in search of his missing father (Michael Kenneth Williams). This begins a struggle to survive and overcome both the racist terrors of white America and the terrifying monsters that could be ripped from a Lovecraft paperback.”

HBO is quickly becoming a destination network for horror programming. Earlier this year they scored a hit with their Stephen King series The Outsider, and recently they announced that a series based on Clive Barker’s Hellraiser mythology was on the way. Of course, over a decade ago they found themselves with a huge summer hit with True Blood. So this should come as no surprise.

Lovecraft Country is set to hit HBO in August, although no specific date has yet been revealed.
