The King of the Monsters is back. But for once, it seems the city of Tokyo is safe. This time, the one and only Godzilla is hitting the British coast. But he’s here to save the day from a possibly more deadly monster than himself, the deadly Battra. And it’s just in time for Battra’s 30th anniversary too, as the winged kaiju first appeared in 1992’s Godzilla vs. Mothra. The action takes place in Godzilla Rivals: Battra from IDW Comics, written by Nerdist’s very own Rosie Knight, and illustrated by Oliver Ono.

Godzilla Rivals: Godzilla vs. Battra variant cover by Tradd Moore.

You can check out the first six pages of Godzilla Rivals: Battra, along with all three variant covers, below. Series artist Oliver Ono illustrates Cover A, while Mark Martinez does the honors for Cover B. Tradd Moore handles the art on Cover C. And you can read the official synopsis for the one-shot premiere issue right here:

In a quiet beachside town ravaged by constant sewage spillages and toxic waste dumps, something is stirring. Deep under the rolling hills that surround Hackney-on-Sea, Battra is awakening, driven by a single goal: to destroy mankind and save planet Earth. The only thing that can stop the monster is Godzilla, but he hasn’t been seen in decades and has never ventured to the cold shores of the English coast…until now.

Robbie runs a small bookshop, but her real passion is monsters. She’s spent years researching the myth of Godzilla and his fearsome foes, and now that hypothetical experience is about to become a life-saving tool. Can Robbie locate Godzilla? Will Godzilla alone be enough to defeat Battra? Is Battra really wrong? And will the goddess Mothra make an appearance? Godzilla Vs. Battra will reveal all.

Godzilla Rivals: Battra arrives on August 3, with a cover price of $7.99 U.S./ $10.00, Canada.
