Get ready to visit the world created by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle in a way you never have before. Coming this fall is Enola Holmes, a new Netflix original movie based on the Enola Holmes Mysteries book series by Nancy Springer. In this new movie, Stranger Things’ Millie Bobby Brown plays the titular role. She’s the much younger sister of legendary detectives Sherlock and Mycroft Holmes. Henry Cavill and The Hunger Games‘ Sam Claflin, respectively, play the brothers. None other than Helena Bonham Carter portrays the Holmes clan matriarch Eudoria Holmes.

“On the morning of her 16th birthday, Enola Holmes (Millie Bobby Brown) wakes to find that her mother (Helena Bonham Carter) has disappeared, leaving behind an odd assortment of gifts but no apparent clue as to where she’s gone or why. After a free-spirited childhood, Enola suddenly finds herself under the care of her brothers Sherlock (Henry Cavill) and Mycroft (Sam Claflin), both set on sending her away to a finishing school for ‘proper’ young ladies. Refusing to follow their wishes, Enola escapes to search for her mother in London. But when her journey finds her entangled in a mystery surrounding a young runaway Lord (Louis Partridge), Enola becomes a super-sleuth in her own right, outwitting her famous brother as she unravels a conspiracy that threatens to set back the course of history.”

In many ways, this movie looks to be a fun variation on Young Sherlock Holmes. Except it has a modern feminist sensibility at play. Originally set to have a theatrical release, Netflix acquired the Warner Bros./Legendary film after the the COVID-19 pandemic hit. The Enola Holmes Mysteries book series began back in 2006, with the last of six YA novels coming out in 2010. Let’s hope that the other installments receive and adaption soon as well.
