The 2022 Emmy nominations are out, and fans of genre TV have plenty to celebrate. But one of Hollywood’s biggest studios doesn’t. The Mouse House won’t be the center of attention during the 74th annual awards show. Disney+ didn’t take home as many major nods as the streaming site likely expected.

The Television Academy announced its 2022 Emmy nominees early this morning. Succession led all dramas with 25 nominations. Meanwhile, Ted Lasso cleaned up for comedies, garnering 20 total. You can check out the full list at the Academy’s official site. But we’re especially excited some of our personal favorite genre shows made the cut. Those types of series wouldn’t have sniffed recognition all that long ago. Now, though, Severance, Squid Game, Stranger Things, and Yellowjackets all got Best Drama nods. And Melanie Lynskey (Yellowjackets), Lee Jung-jae (Squid Game), and Adam Scott (Severance) also got lead acting noms.

Supporting nominations for the 2022 Emmys also went to Park Hae-soo (Squid Game), John Turturro (Severance) Christopher Walken (Severance), and Oh Yeong-su (Squid Game). And Patricia Arquette (Severance), Jung Ho-yeon (Squid Game), and Christina Ricci (Yellowjackets) also nabbed supporting nominations.

Netflix

(We’re also elated Better Call Saul‘s Rhea Seehorn finally got nominated. That was long, long, loooong overdue.)

Meanwhile, What We Do in the Shadows made the list for Best Comedy. However, no one from the cast, one of television’s best, got an acting nomination for the 2022 Emmys. Laszlo was probably wearing that “stupid hat” when they announced the nominees.

FX

If you’re looking through major categories for Disney+ nominations, though, you’ll mostly find them on the animated side. What If…? got an Outstanding Animated Series nomination. Meanwhile, Star Wars: Visions also grabbed a spot for Outstanding Short Form Animated Program. As did The Simpsons‘ short “When Billie Met Lisa.” That means Loki, Moon Knight, Hawkeye, and The Book of Boba Fett got shut out of the biggest categories. They only earned recognition in technical categories.

Tough day for superhero fans, yes. But not necessarily an indictment of those shows or even Disney+. There is a lot of great genre show on TV. And these days they’re all rightfully earning the recognition they have always deserved. We can’t wait to see who takes home the big prizes at the 2022 Emmys.
