Few characters in history have ever had more monikers than Emilia Clarke did on Game of Thrones. She was Daenerys Stormborn of the House Targaryen, First of Her Name, the Unburnt, Queen of the Andals and the First Men, Khaleesi of the Great Grass Sea, Breaker of Chains, and Mother of Dragons. Now she’s ready to add another impressive title to her name: comic book writer.

EW reports the actress has penned her first ever comic, M.O.M.: Mother of Madness. Clarke, who said she came up with the idea initially as a joke three years ago, co-wrote it with Marguerite Bennett. The story follows a single mother named Maya. She doesn’t have the easiest of lives. That changes when, in classic comic book fashion, she finds out she has “freakish superpowers.” And, like any good mom, she puts them to use fighting a “secret cabal of human traffickers.”
That sounds intense, but readers should expect something with a lot of humor. Clarke told EW the series is “Deadpool-esque.” So expect “a lot of silliness” and comedy, all told through a feminist lens “explored in an extreme genre-bending atmosphere.”
That sounds like an apt description based on how—and when—Maya gets her powers. According to Clarke, Maya earns her incredible abilities in a less traditional comic book fashion. She can do amazing things thanks to her menstrual cycle. (Deadpool definitely can’t do that.)

Clarke, a self-described superhero “fangirl,” was driven to create the series because she wants to see more woman represented in comics. This series will do that. Joining her and Bennet are illustrator Leila Leiz, cover artist Jo Ratcliffe, and contributor Isobel Richardson. Maya’s mask is also inspired by the balaclavas worn by Russia’s Pussy Riot.
Image Comics will publish the three-installment miniseries. The first issue hits stands July 21. And based on the description of Maya, we expect after that date Emilia Clarke will have another title: best-selling comic book writer.
