The first ever D&D Direct took place Thursday morning, and the event showcased the updates ahead for Dungeons & Dragons. While Wizards of the Coast has some epic new campaigns in the works (players will be able to play as Plasmoids, essentially slime, soon), the company also brought an update for the Dungeons & Dragons movie. Directors John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein participated in the event, and they shared the Dungeons & Dragons movie title and release date. Paramount Pictures confirmed the cast.

Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves will arrive next year. The directors noted the movie would take place in the Forgotten Realms and specifically mentioned the Sword Coast. This region in the western Faerûn is situated next to the Sea of Swords. It’s pure wilderness with a ton of monstrous creatures, though the Sword Coast does also feature some cities. In short: it’s a region sure to provide some sweeping vistas and cool storytelling opportunities.

And as for the cast? Basically everyone rumored for the Dungeons & Dragons movie is aboard. Paramount Pictures confirmed Chris Pine, Michelle Rodriguez, Regé-Jean Page, Justice Smith, Sophia Lillis, Chloe Coleman, and Hugh Grant. We don’t have specifics about their roles, but sources have said Grant will play the film’s villain. Will he appear in a recognizable form or as one of D&D‘s many monsters?

Paramount Pictures didn’t share any information about the movie’s plot yet. Daley and Goldstein mentioned they were leaning into the fun and surprise that comes with Dungeons & Dragons. Part of me hopes that means they roll for attacks and damages as they’re filming, impractical as that would be. But perhaps they incorporated the chance that comes with rolling dice while creating the script.

Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves will premiere on March 3, 2023.
