DRAGONS: THE NINE REALMS Blends Modernity and Magic in New Clip

The new Dragons: The Nine Realms series, from the How To Train Your Dragon franchise, brings dragons to the modern world. At Nerdist, we’ve previously delighted in the trailer for this brand new show. We love its heart and its plethora of cute creatures. And now, we’re excited to debut a first-look clip from the show. Thunder is coming for Toothless’ MVP award. Or is that MAD. (Most Adorable Dragon.)

In the clip, we meet one of our new heroes, Tom Kullersen, and his new partner-in-crime, Thunder. Needless to say, they’re still feeling each other out. But we can already see this bond will run deep. Thunder seems to embody every good part of more traditional pets. Playful like a puppy, sneaky like a cat, but pure dragon at the end of the day. The dragon seems like it’s also very curious about all things human, so we feel like it hasn’t gotten out much yet. But all that may be about to change…

Is the world ready for dragons? The series will likely tackle that question. But one thing it probably won’t be ready for is dragons chowing down on snacks and then snorting out dragon fire and flaming hot spice breath.

We also love how this clip introduces us to undercut-rocking-Tom. (Yes, we love this hairstyle choice.) Tom seems gentle in the face of the dragon. And makes the right decision not to broadcast his findings on social media. Sometimes, you have to live in the moment, no phones in sight. We kid. But in all seriousness, Tom’s decision to protect the dragon, regardless of how big a dragon TikTok would blow up, makes him deserving of the knowledge that dragons exist.

We can’t wait to see how modernity impacts the How To Train Your Dragon franchise and our main characters when the show airs. In addition to Tom and Thunder, we’ll meet three other dragons and riders in Dragons: The Nine Realms. And we can’t wait to get to know them better as well.

The logline for Dragons: The Nine Realms shares:

Set 1,300 years after the events of How To Train Your Dragon, dragons are now just a legend to the modern world. When a geological anomaly opens up an immense, miles-deep fissure in the Earth’s surface, scientists from all over the world gather at a new research facility to study the mysterious phenomenon. Soon a group of misfit kids, brought to the site by their parents, uncover the truth about dragons and where they’ve been hiding — a secret they must keep to themselves to protect what they’ve discovered.

DreamWorksDragons: The Nine Realms airs on December 23. It will stream on Hulu and Peacock.
