Critical Role-igami – Pop Trinket Out of the Paper

Powered by Geek & Sundry

Critical Role is Geek & Sundry’s live Dungeons & Dragons show featuring Dungeon Master Matthew Mercer and his troupe of fellow voice actors. Catch them every Thursday night at 7:00 PM PT on the Geek & Sundry Twitch channel and on Alpha.

Their story may have concluded, but any time is a good time to revisit your favorite Vox Machina characters. This simple origami how-to will show you how to make a companion of your very own who will be just as loyal and lovable as Vex’s beloved Trinket.

Vex'ahlia Half-Elf Ranger Vax took to the cities, stealing small trinkets and learning the ways of the thief, while Vex kept to the woods. She preferred the isolation. Always the keen observer, she learned to hunt and to track, to spy and to shoot. And through a series of fateful events, earned herself a companion in the form of a bear—her own stolen Trinket—to fight alongside her and protect her fiercely. Also, he is adorable—and gives expert massages. Vex and Trinket were inseparable after she rescued him from a terrible fate. Together with Vax, they took on odd jobs, one day coming across Keyleth on the outskirts of Stilben.

Even if you’ve never tried origami before, this easy project will make you feel like a paper-folding pro.

What You’ll Need

  • Brown and silver origami paper or a brown bag and aluminum foil
  • Black enamel dot stickers or a black marker

Get Started!

Step One: Cut the brown bag and aluminum foil into the same size squares if you’re using them instead of brown and silver origami paper.

Step Two: Line up the brown and silver paper back to back so that the color side is visible. With the silver side facing up, fold the paper point to point to make a triangle, and then over again to the left to make a second triangle. Unfold it so that it’s just the first large triangle pointing downward.

Step Three: Using the line in the middle as a guide, fold in the two corners, overlapping the line just a little. These will form Trinket’s ears.

Step Four: Unfold the ears. Fold up the top three layers of the paper so that the silver side is showing. Fold the top of the triangle (all three layers) along the top edge and over the front to make Trinket’s armor.

Step Five: Fold up the top silver triangle. Fold down the point, and then bring in the two sides of the triangle, and fold it down on top of the other silver triangle again. This is the top layer of Trinket’s plate armor.

Step Six: Fold in the bottom point of the larger triangle to complete the armor, and flip the entire shape over.

Step Seven: Fold the left and right points of the triangle into the middle again, and then fold them back into their original direction.

Step Eight: Fold the two tips of the triangles toward the middle to finish the ears. Fold the bottom point of the triangle just slightly to square off the shape of Trinket’s face.

Step Nine: Flip the shape to the front. Fold the bottom point up toward the middle of Trinket’s face to make his snout. Your origami Trinket is complete!

Step Ten: Of course adding eyes and a nose helps finish off the perfect Trinket. Use black markers or black enamel dot stickers to add those details. You can even stick on a paper tongue to capture his playful spirit and taste for honey.
