You can’t keep a group of friends apart—real friends or the fictional kind. Kevin Smith’s Clerks introduced a group of store clerks who worked at Quick Stop Groceries in New Jersey. The buddies and co-workers went through usual day-to-day drama of humans. The slice of life story put Smith on the map. The director and writer shot the movie on a shoestring budget in locations where he had worked in real life. Clerks launched Smith’s whole film universe. A sequel, Clerks II, premiered in 2006. And now a third film, Clerks III, is in the works and we have our first look at the movie.

Announced in October 2019, the movie’s currently filming in New Jersey in the same locations as the original. Clerks III is bringing the gang back together. Smith wrote the screenplay and will direct. And all the major cast members from the first two Clerks films will reprise their roles: Jeff Anderson as Randal, Brian O’Halloran as Dante, Jay Mewes as Jay, Smith as Silent Bob, and Rosario Dawson as Becky. The first look image shows Elias, Dante, Becky, and Randal at Quick Stop Groceries.

The plot for this outing? The synopsis reads:

In Clerks III, following a massive heart attack, Randal enlists Dante, Elias, Jay and Silent Bob to make a movie immortalizing his life at the convenience store that started it all.

Smith may be pulling from his own life experience there. He suffered a massive heart attack in February 2018. The director said he felt like he cheated death and has since taken his health more seriously. He told Today, “Honestly the heart attack was the best thing that ever happened to me.”

Clerks III is expected to release sometime in 2022.
