Illustration is one of the closest things to magic that we have in our world. The process of a drawing coming to life is one of the purest forms of creation we can witness. And when that combines with the wonder of Disney and its heroines, it’s awe-inspiring indeed. And so, it is our great honor to reveal some exclusive pieces of process art from the new Ravensburger game Chronicles of Light: Darkness Falls (Disney Edition). These six pieces of art tell a wonderful story as they move from idea to final form, chronicling the journey of how the box art for Chronicles of Light came to fruition. Showcased here are the game’s crystal forms of Disney and Pixar’s Maid Marian, Belle, Moana, and Violet. We honestly can’t stop looking at them, and incredibly, their story is even more powerful than just how lovely these drawings are.

Ravensburger’s Alex Land, Art Director for Chronicles of Light: Darkness Falls (Disney Edition), shared more with Nerdist about the reasoning behind the crystallized forms of the heroines in this game. She revealed, “The visuals were decided early on by the team and inspired by jewelry and crystal-cut figurines, both of which are beautiful and feminine, like the heroines in the game. The angular cuts in the jewelry add toughness to the design, and this also allows for light to reflect through the prisms. Bringing light and strength when events get dark are heroic qualities that you’ll see in characters in the game.”

We absolutely love this reasoning for the crystal theme for the heroines in Chronicles of Light: Darkness Falls (Disney Edition). The idea of crystals existing as something beautiful but strong is an incredibly salient one. Like the heroines themselves, crystals are full of light and gorgeous, but that can’t be separated from the fact they are also hard and angular. Adding this crystallization to the art of the Disney heroines in Chronicles of Light truly underscores what we already know about them; they’re kind and magical, but we wouldn’t want to cross them in a fight. This lovely, subtle but potent, addition to the art design of the Disney heroines truly makes them shine. And it sets us up for what we’ll learn when we play the game.

As Land concludes, “This game is about female characters who are put into the role of being the heroines you’d want young girls to emulate. They’re not put into passive roles; they’re taking the lead, helping other people out, and working together to support one another. You can put yourself into that mindset when you play.” And everything, from the art to the story brings this idea to life in Chronicles of Light.

In Chronicles of Light: Darkness Falls (Disney Edition), players work together to form dynamic alliances of Disney and Pixar heroines, including Moana (Moana), Violet (The Incredibles), Maid Marian (Robin Hood) and Belle (Beauty and the Beast). Materializing as radiant crystal versions summoned into the realm, the heroines drive back shadows of infamous Disney Villains and restore the Realm of Light. Along the way, the team explores a brand-new illustrated world and encounters familiar characters, items, and creatures on their quests. Fully designed and illustrated by women, the game’s diverse missions and modular board generate new adventures every time it’s played.
