Looking to buy a new home? Good luck. It’s a seller’s market out there right now. That means you’ll likely have to pay more than you’d like. Even for a house that comes with a few issues. Some properties will need major renovations. Others will be located farther away from where you’d like. But one home currently on the market comes with a caveat that is either very cool or very weird, depending on how big of a cinephile you are. Buffalo Bill‘s house from The Silence of the Lambs is now up for sale.

But no, it does not have a well in the basement.

The home of one of cinema’s most infamous serial killers can now be yours (in a listing we heard about at Boing Boing). The house at 8 Circle St. in Perryopolis, Pennsylvania, the one where Buffalo Bill lived in the iconic film, is available for an asking price of $298,500.

The pleasant three-story Princess Anne Victorian isn’t as sinister as its claim to fame. Sitting on 1.76 acres of “level land along the Youghiogheny River,” it actually seems like a delightful home.

It certainly has some nice amenities. From the official listing:

“Original hardwood floors, woodwork, light fixtures, pocket doors, fireplaces and wallpaper are in pristine condition, dating back to 1910 when the home was built. Recent improvements include reflooring the wrap around porch and gazebo, a rose bed garden and fountain were added at the front, refinished hardwood floors in attic, new hot water tank, well pump and UV filter. Once the Layton Station General Store, the oversized 3 car detached garage has endless possibilities. As does the vintage caboose that sits next to the built-in pool, with new filter and ceramic tile pool deck.”

As the real estate agency notes, the home’s connection to a classic film means it could also have appeal as a destination Airbnb spot. Just think about how many people would want to go down to the cellar.

In a seller’s market you often have to buy a fixer-upper. But this might be a case where making your new home “worse” would be more profitable. If the new owners dig a giant well in the basement they can probably charge even more for people to stay there. Especially if they throw in free lotion.
