There’s been plenty of big news at this year’s E3, from the first proper look at Star Wars: Jedi Fallen Order gameplay, to a surprise Keanu Reeves role in Cyberpunk 2077. In the midst of all the big news, we were particularly intrigued by an unexpected canon Blair Witch Project game, which came with a very creepy trailer.

According to the Bloober YouTube account, the game is a “first-person, story-driven psychological horror game based on the cinematic lore of Blair Witch. It’s 1996. A young boy disappears in the Black Hills Forest near Burkittsville, Maryland. As Ellis, a former police officer with a troubled past, you join the search. What starts as an ordinary investigation soon turns into an endless nightmare as you confront your fears and the Blair Witch, a mysterious force that haunts the woods…”

The two-minute long trailer showcases the protagonist heading into the notorious woods looking for the young boy accompanied only by his dog, but before long he becomes trapped in the sprawling forests facing up to multiple supernatural intruders. Coming from the Polish video game company which is probably best known for 2016’s Layers of Fear, Blair Witch looks to refresh the fading franchise after a badly-received and easily forgotten reboot of the same name from 2016.

This is the first Blair Witch Project-inspired game since the trilogy that was released in 2000, which have a small but dedicated fanbase for unusual and lesser-known horror games. With a massive spotlight at E3, this will likely be far less under the radar when it’s eventually released on August 30th on X-Box and PC. Though few details are known about the game right now, we’ll be keeping our ears to the ground to get you all the scary gaming info as it comes in.
