Deadline reports Anthony Mackie has signed on to carry the shield in Captain America 4. This news would make Mackie the second leading Black superhero in the MCU. Chadwick Boseman was the first as Black Panther.

Details on the new chapter of Captain America remain completely under wraps. This is Marvel, after all. But this will be Mackie’s first MCU film where he will play the titular superhero. To those who watched Disney+‘s The Falcon and The Winter Soldier, this was less of a question. In case you missed the final episode of the series, Sam Wilson (Mackie), a.k.a. The Falcon, finally steps into the Captain America shoes left by his pal Steve Rogers. While this cemented him as the new Captain America, he took quite the journey over six episodes to get there.

And Mackie isn’t the only The Falcon and The Winter Soldier alumni heading to Captain America 4. Malcolm Spellman, series head writer and creator, will write the film’s script. Additionally, Dalan Musson, who was a staff writer for the show, will co-write.

However, still under Marvel’s cloak of secrecy is whether or not Sebastian Stan, a.k.a. Bucky Barnes/The Winter Soldier, will appear in the film. Also, the series left many questions unanswered about John Walker‘s U.S. Agent (Wyatt Russell) and Sharon Carter (Emily VanCamp). It’s possible those characters could appear in the next Captain America move.

Unfortunately, no release date has been announced. The latest round of Marvel announcements puts the furthest release date as May 5, 2023 for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. This may mean we have a few years to wait to see our newest hero in action. But, as the saying goes, the best things come to those who wait. And we’re sure this is going to be one epic story!
