After her revolutionary Vampire Chronicles series of novels became bestsellers, author Anne Rice followed up that series with another supernatural saga, The Lives of the Mayfair Witches. The first book in the series, The Witching Hour, came out in 1990, and explored the family tree of a New Orleans family of magic users. Now, following the television debut of Interview with the Vampire, AMC is returning to Louisiana for their Mayfair Witches series. The series also has an official premiere date. It will debut on January 5, 2023. You can watch the first full trailer right here:

The series stars Alexandra Daddario as Rowan Mayfair. She’s a California neurosurgeon who discovers that she is the heir to a legacy of witchcraft and hauntings. She returns to her birthplace of New Orleans and begins to uncover her family’s long history with the supernatural. She also makes contact with an organization called the Talamasca, an ancient order that studies supernatural phenomena across the centuries. They also study the vampires, and are the tissue that connects both of Anne Rice’s series of novels together. One spirit in particular, who goes by the name Lasher, is a particular threat to her family—and is also particularly sexy. Jack Huston will portray Lasher in the series.

It will be interesting to see how much the series deviates from Anne Rice’s original novel, or its two follow-up books, Lasher and Taltos. Two of the principal characters from The Witching Hour, Michael Curry and Talamasca scholar Aaron Lightner, seem to be nowhere to be found in the series. These would be huge omissions from the narrative, so we hope they show up at some point. It will also be interesting to see how the producers connect Mayfair Witches to the vampire series. This was something Rice herself did in the early 2000s. It’s a large tapestry of stories that the network seems eager to mine for content.
