AGENTS OF S.H.I.E.L.D. Final Season to Premiere in May

Because of the circumstances we all find ourselves in, this will be the first summer in 12 years without a Marvel Studios movie. But that doesn’t mean we will be going without any Marvel entertainment. ABC and Marvel Television have just announced that the seventh and final season of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. will premiere on Wednesday, May 27, at 10:00 pm ET. And they’ve released a little clip of Agent Phil Coulson (Clark Gregg) making his very welcome return. Well, sort of.

Gregg is indeed back, but Coulson died (for the second time) at the end of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. season five. Then Gregg returned to play an identical looking character named Sarge and a L.M.D. version of Coulson (that’s a Life Model Decoy for the uninitiated). One assumes the version in this teaser for season seven is the Coulson L.M.D., although anything is possible. Normally, I’d float the idea of his being a Skrull, but the series has veered more and more away from any explicit tie-ins to the current MCU.

Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. in another time

Season seven will explore the origins of S.H.I.E.L.D. as an organization. We’ve only seen hints about that in the larger Marvel Cinematic Universe. We know Peggy Carter eventually shaped the S.S.R. into S.H.I.E.L.D sometime after World War II, along with Tony Stark’s father Howard. However, since ABC cancelled her series after two seasons, we never got to see that happen. This final season of S.H.I.E.L.D. will find our main characters stuck in the past trying to prevent an alien occupation. But hopefully we will see them interacting with Peggy and maybe even Dominic Cooper as the elder Stark. Either way, we expect a good dose of Marvel history.

Returning for the final season along with Gregg are Ming-Na Wen, Chloe Bennet, Iain De Caestecker, Elizabeth Henstridge, Henry Simmons, Natalia Cordova-Buckley, and Jeff Ward. Like the previous season, it will consist of 13 episodes. Here’s hoping the adventures of the Strategic Homeland Intervention, Enforcement, and Logistics Division end with a bang.
