Alanis Morissette Updated ‘Ironic’ for 2015 with James Corden

A lot has changed in twenty years, but one thing that has remained constant is our society’s utter failure to understand the definition of “irony.” So it was only fitting for Alanis Morissette to sing an updated version of her hit song “Ironic”, a modern version inspired by the internet-age, with the same flawed understanding of what makes something a little too ironic.

Last night Morissette joined James Corden on The Late Late Show, and the two sang a duet with updated lyrics for an updated world.

An old friend
Sends you a Facebook request
You only find out they’re racist
After you accept

The song also touched upon Waze, Uber, Amazon, Netflix, and the lack of any female late night hosts.

It’s free office cake
On the first day of your diet
It’s like they announce a new iPhone
The day after you buy it

Morissette has been out promoting the release of a special 20th anniversary edition of her mega-hit album, Jagged Little Pill. Feel free to feel as old as I do at the fact that album is 20 years old.

It’s like swiping left
On your future soulmate
It’s a Snapchat
That you wish you had saved
It’s a funny tweet
That nobody faves

Make sure you listen to the rest of the song because it’s really funny, and yes, they do make fun of the lack of irony in a song about irony. Twenty years in and we’re still getting value out of that joke.
