It’s been a long time coming, but it’s nearly time for Ubisoft Motion Pictures to begin production on their upcoming Assassin’s Creed film, which is due out December 21, 2016. Since the reveal back in 2011, all we really knew was that Michael Fassbender (X-Men, Macbeth) and Marion Cotillard (The Dark Knight Rises, Macbeth) were cast as leads, and that Justin Kurzel (Macbeth) was set to direct.
With filming just around the corner, Ubisoft Motion Pictures has finally lifted the hood on the project, releasing the first image of Michael Fassbender as a brand new character exclusively to Yahoo. Check it out below:
After years of running around as a hooded assassin in the games, it’s fantastic to finally see what the film version is going to look like. I you’re like me, and tried staring at the image hoping to discern who, when, or where Fassbender’s character comes from, take a breather, because he is reportedly a brand new character who was created specifically for the film. So, if you were hoping for Desmond Miles, all I can say is sorry.
So who is this new assassin? Well, according to Yahoo, Fassbender will be playing a character named Callum Lynch. Much like Miles, Lynch discovers that he is a descendant of the secret Assassin’s society via genetic memories that allow him to relive his assassin ancestor Aguilar’s–who hails from 15th Century Spain–adventures. Using the knowledge and skills he gains in the Animus, he’ll be able to take on the Knights Templar in his own timeline.
This news comes at a perfect time, adding to the hype for the next entry in the video game franchise, Assassin’s Creed: Syndicate. The game, which stars a set of twin assassins in Industrial Revolution-era London, will be launching on October 23, 2015.
