Could the X-Men ever make their way into the MCU? Considering all the perceived bad blood between Marvel and Fox, the conventional wisdom always seemed to be “no freaking way!” But the conventional wisdom may be changing. In a recent interview with Screen Rant, head of Marvel Television Jeph Loeb said that the company would definitely be interested in finding a way to connect all their shows. The catch is getting the networks–ABC, Netflix and FX–to play nice. That may seem like a pretty minor statement, but hidden within it is a very major revelation. As we already know ABC series like Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. and Netflix series like Luke Cage take place inside the MCU. Meanwhile FX plans to start airing Legion next year, a new show set within the the X-Men film franchise. By saying that Marvel would be interested in finding a way to bring all these shows together, Loeb is essentially saying that they’d be willing to connect the X-Men to the MCU.
Clearly this crossover is still in the highly speculative stages, but it’s not without precedent. It was only a few years ago that it seemed impossible that Sony would ever share Spider-Man with an outside studio. However, when The Amazing Spider-Man films proved to be not so amazing at the box office, they realized the benefits of sharing custody of the Wall Crawler with folks over at Marvel. It’s entirely possible that Fox could have the same change of heart, especially after the fantastic flop that was last summer’s Fantastic Four. There’s even a chance that Marvel is setting the ground work for all of this now with with Doctor Strange. We now know that Stephen Strange’s journey to superheroism will take him on a detour through the Marvel Multiverse. This could easily explain how two seemingly incompatible universes, like the X-Men and the MCU, could come crashing together.
