OK, so maybe not Mordor. And maybe not even New Zealand. But still, going anywhere near one of Chile’s most active volcanoes is a brave feat on its own, let alone gliding over it in nothing but a wingsuit. Well, that’s just the sort of thing you can expect world-renowned and award-winning BASE jumper Roberta Mancino to go and do. Thankfully, she brought along a few GoPro cameras in order to share the experience with the world.
Villarrica is one of Chile’s most active stratovolcanoes, located in the Andes mountain range, and it has erupted as recently as March of 2015. According to the video’s description, Mancino has long dreamed about flying her wingsuit over a volcano (sure, who hasn’t had that dream) and thanks to her years of training, got to do just that. Dropping in from 15,000 feet above Villarrica, the wingsuited daredevil soars directly over the mouth of the actively magma-spewing crater, getting some of the most beautiful footage ever captured on a GoPro. There are helicopter tours of the volcano for tourists but Mancino’s flight was truly an experience she (and her companions) have only to themselves. We can’t imagine the thoughts that would be going through our heads, and the expletives coming out of our mouths, if we were to try such a thing but Mancino is a true pro, landing with a relatively reserved “Woo” as if it’s just another day at the office for her. Not to say she wasn’t excited, but consider her other days “at the office,” like the time she went swimming with crocodiles.
Other than the obvious fact that Mancino’s profile picture game must be on point, and although we already made a different genre reference, we’re going to have to admit that Roberta Mancino is likely a modern-day Khaleesi.
What sights would you like to see from the vantage point of a wingsuit? Does pledging our allegiance to the real-life Mother Of Dragons involve paperwork or is the process an online form? Let’s discuss in the comments below!
