One of the greatest drum parts of all time still sounds just as great. Phil Collins performed “In the Air Tonight” on Jimmy Fallon’s show and blew the crowd away. That’s not the only music news that’s got us buzzing. The Decembrists have an awesome 10th anniversary reissue in the works, Record Store Day announced crazy releases for Black Friday, Ice Cube will play Oliver Twist in a new Disney musical, and Pussy Riot return with their coolest feminist anthem to date.
Phil Collins may be getting older, but he isn’t slowing down. The ex-Genesis member and famous solo artists visited The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon on Tuesday this week to perform his classic hit “In the Air Tonight.” Joined by The Roots, he gave it tons of punch. Between his reissue series, new memoir, and the comeback tour, Phil Collins is at the top of his game. In fact, it’s hard to tell he ever left
Ten years ago, The Decemberists changed the way indie rock worked with the release of their classic LP, The Crane Wife. The song reimagined order, waxed poetic lyrics, and dealt in-depth with mysterious songwriting. To celebrate its anniversary, the band will release a five-disc vinyl set packed with B-sides, demos, and more. One of the coolest parts about the anniversary reissue? It includes essays from Hamilton‘s Lin-Manuel Miranda and Rolling Stone‘s David Fricke. The set officially comes out December 9, but you can pre-order right now if you head to The Decemberists’ website. [Rolling Stone]
Record Store Day is busy prepping itself for its annual Black Friday event. This year’s takes place on November 25th. To celebrate, a number of artists have vinyl exclusives ready to drop then. Who, you ask? Just a few acts you may have heard of before: Prince, The Rolling Stones, Jack White, Erykah Badu, and more. The biggest of those is, of course, Prince since he passed away earlier this year. Be quick to grab the release, though. It’s a 12-inch picture disc with his 1992 single “Sexy M.F.” and is sure to go fast. [Rolling Stone]
N.W.A. can do anything. If you don’t believe it, just look at Ice Cube and his career transitions since the rapping days. The hip-hop idol, actor, and comedian will now star in a musical. Disney plans on releasing a new musical adaptation of Oliver Twist with Hamilton director Thomas Kail. Who is cast as the leader of the pickpocket crew? Well, Ice Cube. Not only that, but Ice Cube will produce and write for the musical, too. Not too bad of a career trajectory, huh?
No one throws a feminist protest quite like Pussy Riot, especially when it comes to making an anthem out of it. The Russian act return this week with “Straight Outta Vagina,” a single that sees Desi Mo and Leikeli47 taking verses. Dave Sitek of TV on the Radio produced it, which explains the bouncy hip-hop style beat. If you need a reminder about why being female makes you tough, listen up. The song empowers, uplifts, and demonstrates strength, especially when it comes to your voice and your relevance. [Consequence of Sound]
