Somewhere in Keanu Reeves’ attic there’s a portrait of the Matrix superstar in which he’s a hideous, grotesque ghoul, a portrait locked away from all the world lest it reveal Reeves’ true nature… Well, how else to explain a man who appears to get younger with each passing year? (The wizard Merlin reincarnate? The blood of virgins? Some say I read too much.) Regardless, after starring in last year’s martial arts epics 47 Ronin and Man on Tai Chi – the latter of which he directed – Reeves is back for some modern-day mayhem in John Wick. In the film’s title role, the actor plays a former hit man forced out of retirement by his enemies. Fight choreographer Chad Stahelski makes his feature-film directorial debut with Wick, but the film’s real selling point is its supporting cast. Hot. Damn. If there was an Oscar for casting, John Wick would be the odds-on favorite. Just look at this list of names: Willem Dafoe, Jason Isaacs, Bridget Moynahan, Lance Reddick, John Leguizamo, Adrianne Palicki, Michael Nyqvist, Games of Thrones‘ Alfie Allen (better known as Theon Greyjoy), and Ian I-Shit-You-Not McShane. That’s enough crazy-sexy in one movie to turn even Frank Miller into a spastic fanboy. Check out the film’s trailer below and see if you agree.
Keanu Reeves’ acting frequently draws criticism for its, er, minimalism. But pairing him up against this platoon of beloved veterans seems to have done wonders for him. Just listen to the way he delivers that line, “People keep asking if I’m back… Yeah, I’m thinkin’ I’m back.” Mickey Rourke himself couldn’t do a better job. Shivers.
How about you guys? Will Wick be worthwhile? Or are you still holding out hope for the recently rumored Matrix reboot? Let us know in the comments below.
