Holy groove thing, Batman! Like it or not, we live in an age in which celebrity lip sync battles, carpool karaoeke, and dance-offs garner far more press and media attention than issues that directly affect every one of us. But the civil servants of the world, the ones whose everyday sacrifices are usually taken for granted, have caught onto this imbalance, and have taken a page from the viral video playbook. The “Running Man Challenge” is a new online sensation that’s seeing police departments across the globe challenging one another in video dance-off competitions. In so doing, it’s humanizing and spotlighting a vocation that’s too often taken for granted.
Of course, it makes sense that the most famous fictional crimefighter in the world would want to get in on this action. As can be seen in the latest Running Man video, reported by WCNC.com, which finds the one and only Batman dancing his ass off with some cops from the City of Monroe, Georgia Police Department, from whose custody he’s trying to escape. (The continuity-obsessed among us can perhaps place this after the events of Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight.)
The Caped Crusader is no stranger to the art of boogie-woogie, having previously gotten down with his bad self by doing the Batusi in the 1996 Adam West-starring Batman TV show as well as in Prince’s immortal 1989 “Batdance.” So there is indeed precedence for the madness.
