Valve To Make Three Steam-Related Announcements In The Next Week

The folks at Valve will be making three announcements in relation to Steam and its living room initiative in the next week. The company, in true meta fashion, announced its impending announcements alongside a teaser website that they launched today. The site features a bit of cosmic-themed imagery while teasing: “The Steam Universe Is Expanding”. There’s also a countdown that finishes on Monday, September 23, at 1 p.m. ET.

What could the big V possibly be gracing us with this time?  Steam Big Picture, Valve’s living-room solution for Steam users, was released last December but left a lot to be desired, since it still required users’ computer units. According to the website, Valve has been working to find different ways to “connect the dots for customers who want Steam in the living-room.”

At this point, all signs are pointing at the imminent unveiling of Valve’s long-awaited Steam console. Considering the announcements’ pre-holiday season timing and the sensational teasing to garner our curiosity (who builds a website to announce something minuscule?), it would be sensible to assume such. Gabe Newell, head of Valve, mentioned earlier this week at Linuxcon the company’s plans to reveal details on bringing Linux-based gaming to the living room. That leads me to assume that at least one of the three upcoming announcements has to be about the so-called “Steam Box.”

The aforementioned is merely a hypothesis at present, meaning it’s about as plausible as a Half-Life 3 announcement coming within the next week. In any case, we’ll be keeping an eye on Valve’s countdown timer and announcements as they’re divulged.

@Ryan GTA V has sold over 16 million copies in 3 days, so I think your estimate is a little off

  2. Ryan says:

Half Life 3 is easily the most anticipated game of all time. If it were announced as Steam Box exclusive, that system would sell more than GTA V.

  3. Brian says:

I would be very surprised if they release the steam box and HL3 isn’t their launch title. Think about it, you have a new system that has been in the works and are competing up against next gen consoles and PCs coming back to life. You need something to draw the crowds to your system, Half-Life 3 would sell units.

Half-Life 3 and Portal 3 EXCLUSIVELY on Steam Box = a whole lot of game systems sold. (if they did that, which would be a good way to sell their box)
