When it comes to television, there are few programs as consistently entertaining as USA’s Psych. Shawn Spencer is an amazing character that over the last eight years has become extremely complex – especially around season five when the truth behind his wacky behavior was revealed (in the episode that sees his mother kidnapped, he reveals his cut loose approach to serious situations is what allows him to access his powers of observation). But sadly, it seems the time of Shawn and his partner in crime, Gus, is coming to an end.
In a press release sent out this morning, USA has revealed the series will conclude following the finale of the current season on March 26th, and will be immediately followed by the “PSYCH After Show.” “PSYCH has made an indelible imprint on the television landscape, with a unique brand of comedy,” said Chris McCumber, President of USA Network. “The final season celebrates the iconic characters that have made this show so beloved, and will be an exclamation point on the series’ incredible run. And while the series will wrap in March somehow I don’t believe we’ve heard the last of Shawn and Gus.” On the after show, the network added “The ‘PSYCH After Show’ is an interactive special featuring the stars and creator of the long-running series. Produced by Wilshire Studios, the after show will celebrate PSYCH’s eight seasons with favorite clips, audience Q&A and never-before-seen footage.”
As many Psych-Os will be upon hearing this news, the announcement is bittersweet. With many of the supporting cast continuing to pick up roles in the past few weeks and a shortened episode order for the current season, the writing was fairly on the wall for this news to come, but it doesn’t make it sting any less. Psych is one of the best things USA has done in the last 10 years, and unlike Burn Notice, which ultimately fizzled out in the end, Psych has remained of the highest quality, and was always willing to push the limits of what it could do – I mean, did you guys see the musical episode? Genius.
The show’s stars, James Roday and Dule Hill, have recorded a special message for fans on the show’s Facebook page too.
Psych is a show that will truly be missed, but it’s nice to see USA will be giving it the respect it deserves in the end. And who knows, maybe this won’t be the last we see of Shawn and Gus. Psych movie anyone?
I’m gonna go cuddle with a pineapple now.
