Move over, Frankenstein’s monster! It’s time for the Bride to appear on screen once again. In Sunday’s Horror Happenings column, Clarke Wolfe shed some more light on the Universal Monsters shared universe deal, and now we’re hearing that Angelina Jolie is the top choice for the Bride of Frankenstein remake.
The original 1935 classic horror film starred another formidable actress in the terrifying lead role, Elsa Lanchester, with Boris Karloff returning to his iconic role as the male Creature that eccentric scientist Henry Frankenstein (renamed for the film) created in Frankenstein. From her freaky frizzed-out hair to her bloodcurdling scream, the Bride symbolizes the truly classic campy horror of the early twentieth century.
Jolie has been a longtime fan of fantastical and obscure characters on screen, having starred in films such as The Bone Collector, Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow, Beowulf, Wanted, and Maleficent. So, it’s not a question of if she could portray the shirking creature known only as the Bride. The question is, does Angelina Jolie want or have time for this role? She’s shifted her focus to directorial projects as of late, with By the Sea‘s release two weeks ago, so she may have her hands full behind the camera for the time being.
The list of other considered Universal Monster films includes The Wolfman, The Mummy, and Creature From the Black Lagoon. And even though the original Bride of Frankenstein only featured a few minutes of the Bride in all her black and white film glory, perhaps this chance at a remake with such a high-profile actress will prompt the writers to make more room for her character on screen after her resurrection.
