TV-Cap: Gillian Anderson Joins AMERICAN GODS

TV-Cap: Gillian Anderson Joins AMERICAN GODS

The weekend happened, and it brought more Game of Thrones—which, in my book, means it was an excellent weekend. Let’s dip our toes into the week ahead and catch up on some television news. Read today’s TV-Cap to learn about who Gillian Anderson is playing in American Gods, to find out about some positive diversity moves on Doctor Who, and to see Robot Chicken’s spoof on Batman v Superman.

PR Duties. Gillian Anderson is working with Bryan Fuller again; she’s been cast in Starz’s adaptation of Neil Gaiman’s American Gods. She’ll be playing Media, the public face and sales representative of the New Gods. She thrives on the attention people give to their screens. In the book, Media was all about being the goddess of television. But, technology has come a ways since the book was published in 2001. I look forward to seeing how Media has evolved with the times. Hello, Team. Voltron: Legendary Defender is almost here. The next era of the franchise will debut on Netflix on June 10. You can pass the time by learning more about the team and how they’ve changed. More Merlyn. Arrow’s Malcolm Merlyn is an unpredictable wild card of a character. You never know which side he’ll find more to his liking. His past is a mystery, but it’s explored more in the DC Comic titled The Dark Archer. John and Carole Barrowman pen the story featuring art by a team led by Daniel Sampere. Nerdist talked to the Barrowmans about rounding out the character in the comic. You can read what they had to say right this way.

Batman’s Over It. Robot Chicken’s done it. They’ve found a way to make Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice funny. Their parody, embedded above, is just the latest in a string of skits and specials poking fun at the DC universe, and it’s delightful. [Nerdist]

Doctor Diversity. Doctor Who is one of many shows on television that needs to do better in the diversity department, hence the next companion not being another white girl. They apparently tried to switch it up with the Doctor as well. Showrunner Steven Moffat told the official Doctor Who magazine they offered the role of the Twelfth Doctor to a black actor first, but “for various reasons, it didn’t work out.” Moffat recognized that wasn’t an excuse not to take more steps towards diversity. All the Details. It’s no secret the props on Game of Thrones look well made and beautiful. If you need convincing, flip through Making Game of Thrones and take a look at production diary photos–like the ones of Heartsbane. The Tarly family sword is made from Valyrian steel, and it’s positively gorgeous. See more pictures of Heartsbane at Nerdist. [Images: HBO]

Ouch. Dominic Purcell took a blow on the set of Prison Break. He shared news about the injury on Instagram. First of all, he’s fine now. He’s recovering, and he’s back to work. His nose was broken in two places and his head was busted open because an iron bar fell on him. So, if Lincoln Burrows looks a little beat up in the show, some of it might not be makeup. [The Hollywood Reporter]

Adding Laughs. Game of Thrones has a few comedic beats, but overall, it’s not about going for the laughs. You can add som extra humor by watching the show with Rifftrax. They’ve applied their unique perspective to the first episode of the series, “Winter Is Coming.” You can taste a sample of their thoughts in the above preview and then buy the complete commentary track at their website. Catch Up. Television moves fast, so reading recaps can help you capture details you missed the first time around. Luckily for you, we have them for the latest episodes of Outlander, Game of Thrones, and Preacher.
