It’s that time of year again — the trailer for Woody Allen’s latest, Magic in the Moonlight is here for your viewing pleasure. Set in the 1930s mostly in the South of France, it’s got all the hallmarks of Woody Allen whimsy, a welcome turn towards the lighthearted after last year’s gut wrenching and excellent Blue Jasmine.
Old guy-sweet young thing pairing du jour is Colin Firth as the greatest de-bunker of fake spiritualists and Emma Stone as the current spiritualist in question. She may or may not be swindling a family of socialites, and dashing Firth is sent to investigate. Rounding out the Downton-Abbey-meets-Grand-Budapest-Hotel-style farce is a delightful cast featuring Jacki Weaver, Hamish Linklater, and Marcia Gay Harden. You’ve got tennis matches, a romantic-couple-caught-in-the-rain scene, seances, a charming mix of accents from the Continent (and a conspicuous lack thereof), and lots of hats. What’s not to like? Check out the trailer.
Magic in the Moonlight hits theaters in limited release July 25, 2014.
