At conventions I’m always on the lookout for fun kids’ cosplay, and the most inventive ones usually get a little bit of help from their parents. In this case it definitely helped that this mini superhero had a dad who was a professional balloon artist.
This tiny Wonder Woman is already adorable, and her perfect tiara and sparkly shoes really bring the whole outfit together. But it’s her invisible jet that put the cuteness level over the top. The balloon jet was made by her dad who goes by the alias of Smarty Pants, a professional balloon sculptor.
He made this accessory for her to wear to in the kids cosplay contest at the Milwaukee Comic Con. As fragile as it looks, (if you can see it, that is. It’s invisible, don’t you know?) the jet lasted all day on the convention floor. According to her dad she wore it all day until she got tired of it and wanted a donut. This donut-loving Wonder Woman is clearly my spirit animal. Smarty Pants says that these elaborate sculptures are able to last up to a week, which is pretty impressive.
As her dad tells it, 5-year-old Penny knew exactly what she wanted for her costume. “My daughter has become obsessed with DC Super Hero Girls and loves Wonder Woman. She wanted to dress up as Wonder Woman for the costume contest and I made an off-hand joke that I would make her an invisible jet out of balloons. I found out when it comes to 5-year-olds, there’s no off-hand jokes! She was very serious about getting this jet, and there was no way I was letting my kid down!”
Smarty Pants is a big comic book fan and creates a lot of superhero balloons, but making the invisible jet for his daughter was definitely a labor of love. Now that Penny knows what her dad’s capable of, she’s thinking Batgirl’s Batplane should be next. This little superhero knows you can’t fight crime with out the proper transportation.
