Yes, you read that headline correctly. “A.V. Undercover,” a series by, you guessed it, The A.V. Club, has different musicians come in over the course of the year and perform cover songs off a list often compiled from reader suggestions. This results in some seriously awesome renditions of songs by bands that would have never attempted the song in the first place. Amazing music and some funny moments happen when, despite a few rehearsals, bands are just winging it to some degree.
With John Linnell of They Might Be Giants taking up the mantle of Queen Bey and John Flansburgh backing him up as the rest of the…Children of Destiny(?), the guys belt out the 1999 hit single “Bills Bills Bills”. Singing their hearts out about the need of essential bills — of the “Telephone” and “Automo” nature to be precise — TMBG put their mark on the song and truly make it their own. The only thing they really lack in this version of the song is the fabulous late 90s wardrobe that we came to expect in all the Destiny’s Child videos. For contrast, listen/watch the original here so you can decide which version is better.
This being the “6th season” of the series, it’s hard to pick favorites. And the They Might Be Giants cover isn’t all that out of left field considering some of the other songs A.V. Club has had bands do in the past. You can check out all the songs from year’s past here, but we’d be remiss if we didn’t at least mention two of our favorites from previous seasons. We of course mean the best re-imagining of Van Halen’s “Panama” by comedian/musician Reggie Watts and GWAR covering “West End Girls” by The Pet Shop Boys.
Of course they’re below! We’d be monsters if we mentioned those without giving you the chance to watch them immediately.
