It’s a very exciting day for comedy nerds everywhere, particularly those in the Southern California area. Because the Upright Citizens Brigade is movin’ on up to the east side: to a deluxe new theater in the sky (or, more accurately, East Hollywood). Oh yes, the funny just got upgraded.
The UCB’s newest venue will be the main home for their improv and sketch writing training classes, in addition to an 85-seat theater, a mini-performance space that also doubles as a cafe called the Inner Sanctum, video production offices, and even a retail store at the street level.
The whole thing opens up on November 1st and apparently will be chockablock with “a highly trained team of baristas” and “an incredible art and sculpture collection” from the Diane and Sandy Besser Collection, which we’re sure will to make you chuckle and think in equal measure. (The coffee and the art, natch. Are these beans single-origin?) Officially called the UCB Theatre Sunset, these sweet digs are located at 5419 Sunset Boulevard, where a big ol’ comedy party is slated to go down on the 1st, complete with comedy out the wazoo from the OG UCBers — a/k/a the ones that started it all! — Amy Poehler, Matt Besser, Ian Roberts, and Matt Walsh. Other UCB stalwarts and icons from LA and New York are also slated to be in attendance. And have no fear, all you Franklin Avenue ghouls, that theater will still have shows seven nights a week.
And it looks pretty, too.
So get ready — your search for open mic nights, improv jams, and other sorts of workshoppin’ comedy shows is over.
So — how fancy are these sweet new digs, eh? Let us know what you think in the comments.
