Apparently this year is all about movies featuring animated animals, such as Zootopia, The Secret Life of Pets, and now Illumination’s latest animated film, Sing. The trailer has just released for the film, and it looks pretty freaking adorable (and notably absent of those internet-infamous minions).
The movie is about a singing competition—think American Idol with animals—that not only brings a community together, but it also saves a local theater and teaches the competitors about being themselves and reaching for their dreams.
Matthew McConaughey stars as a koala who is putting on the singing competition to save his dying theater, Tori Kelly plays a timid elephant who is working to overcome stage fright, Seth MacFarlane plays a croonin’ con-mouse, Reese Witherspoon is a run-ragged mom of 25 piglets with a killer voice, Scarlett Johansson is the voice of a punk-rock porcupine, and Taron Egerton plays a Cockney gangster gorilla. Of course my personal favorite has to be second pig, this one with a German accent and a sequined full-body leotard, voiced by Nick Kroll.
It will be interesting to see how audiences react to Sing after Zootopia set the bar for animated talking animal movies so high. Regardless, this movie looks like it will be an adorable animated movie that kids and parents will enjoy. Even better, the soundtrack promises to be pretty great as well. Sing will feature 85 (you read that right, 85) hit songs for your musical enjoyment.
Sing is written and directed by Garth Jennings and will be in theaters December 21. Will you be seeing Sing in theaters? Which character do you think you’ll fall in love with the most? Let’s talk about Sing in the comments!
