Like just about every other active musician today, Spoon and Divine Fits frontman Britt Daniel was inspired by David Bowie, and just like everybody else, he was pretty broken up about his death. The tributes have been pouring in, and Daniel added his voice to the conversation today with an acoustic cover of “Never Let Me Down,” which you can listen to below.
On the morning of Bowie’s passing, Daniel also shared a heartfelt post on Facebook that featured a portrait of a childhood Bowie and the caption, “I went to bed early last night. Woke up at 3 and glanced at my phone. It’s 5:15 now and I’m realizing there’ll be no more sleep tonight. I was just saying last week isn’t it amazing how Bowie is still with us and we get another album from him? No other artist has meant as much to me personally or inspired my own songs as much. What a spirit. What an inspiration. What a shining example of the beauty that humanity can create. Bless him. -BD”
Daniel wasn’t the only figure from the alternative rock world to honor Bowie yesterday. On last night’s episode of The Late Show With Stephen Colbert, EL VY–who is fronted by The National‘s Matt Berninger–was the musical guest and they teamed up with the show’s house band, Stay Human, for a funky cover of “Let’s Dance.” Consider us on board with the tambourine breakdown from the guy in the cowboy hat.
