The Music Geek Track of the Week: “Warsaw” by Sharon Van Etten

If you’ve followed me on Nerdist this past year you know I have a thing for female singer-songwriters (and Kristen Stewart, apparently. I believe I even called her a “Baberaham Lincoln”). But seriously. This isn’t even the first time I have brought up the fact that I have written about the laaaydaaays. Some might call it “lazy journalism,” or “fucking creepy,” but I like to think of it as “thematic consistency.”

This past week, Sharon Van Etten released her second full length LP, “Tramp,” and I have to say, I am glad she is finally getting the attention she so deserves. Mostly because she is incredible, but also because it dilutes my stalker-esque adoration of her. She made my top-ten list in 2010 and I would not be shocked if she found herself on that list again this year.

I chose the lead track, “Warsaw,” because it gives much-needed momentum to an album that is sometimes languorously intimate. But being slow and concerted doesn’t make the album oppressive by any means –it makes it honest. There is no bullshit when you listen to Sharon Van Etten, and that is something that is increasingly hard to come by (cough cough, Lana Del Rey).
