Before ever reading an interview with Mac DeMarco, I was absolutely-100-percent sure this dude was a Twin Peaks fiend. The Montreal native has totally got this whole weathered 90s Pacific Northwest look about him and the cover of his first EP features him seductively applying lipstick in what looks like an outtake of a Black Lodge scene.
When you hear the first coruscating tremolo of “Ode To Viceroy,” can’t you picture Audrey Horne sauntering provocatively and saying something like, “Isn’t it too dreamy?” Or maybe Bobby Briggs lighting up and slicking back his perpetually unshowered hair.
Given that the track is an ode to an increasingly rare and exceedingly shitty cigarette, I imagine DeMarco had the latter image in mind when he penned “Aw, honey, I’ll smoke you till I’m dyin’.” Sort of fatalistic, but DeMarco seems too groggy here to care about long-term consequences. Demarco’s album, 2, is out now via Captured Tracks.
