The record books will forever show that on January 10, 2016 at The Beverly Hilton Hotel, the 73rd Golden Globe Awards presented the trophy for Best Musical or Comedy Motion Picture to The Martian.
You know the film I’m talking about. That really funny movie about a man stranded on Mars. The one with all the singing. Yes yes, exactly—the hit comedy of 2015. It was like Cast Away meets Chicago meets Interstellar meets The Hangover.
Okay, obviously The Martian wasn’t a comedy, and it definitely wasn’t a musical, but that doesn’t mean it couldn’t have been either. And the folks at Mashable Watercooler have now shown us just what that might have looked like with the latest installment in their series Trailer Mix, where they re-imagine popular movies in totally different genres.
It’s not hard to make The Martian into a Home Alone-style space comedy; the film did indeed have plenty of laughs, mostly thanks to Matt Damon‘s witty Mark Watney. But turning it into a musical required them to go beyond just reediting and changing the score for the trailer. This time around, they had to add in voice-over singing to make it a musical. (Though I am surprised they didn’t go with some disco numbers, for obvious reasons.)
I couldn’t possibly even guess what won Best Musical or Comedy Motion Picture at the Golden Globes last year, but I’ll always remember The Martian‘s bizarre win. So maybe the key to making these awards memorable is to just have them make no sense. I look forward to being just as confused when the Grammys give Kobe Bryant a Lifetime Achievement Award in 2017.
Can you think of a more bizarre win than The Martian for Best Musical or Comedy? Tell us in the comments below.
